A better nitrogen use to improve organic wheat production Organic Eprints
Doltra, Jordi.
Different crop management strategies are investigated in representative soils and climatic conditions of Denmark to enhance the yield and quality of organic wheat. The agronomic practices include the use of manure, catch crops and the composition of the crop rotation. Among these, manure application was the main factor affecting yields. Model predictions indicate that wheat yield could be improved by increasing manure nitrogen.

A comparative study of organic lupine and fava bean crops in a Mediterranean environment. Organic Eprints
Hadjigeorgiou, Dr Ioannis; Sagou, Miss Vasiliki; Sagos, Mr Dimitrios; Bilalis, Prof Dimitrios; Moustakas, Prof Nikolaos.
Organic Animal Farming (OAF) systems hold a major part in Organic Agriculture (OA). Alternative protein crops are essential in the development of OAF in order to substitute technically and economically non-acceptable protein sources in Organic Animal feeding. A study, aiming to compare white lupine (Lupinus albus cv Multitalia) and fava bean (Vicia faba cv Vesuvio) crops, was undertaken in Central Greece. The study compared the two plant species under organic or conventional management regimes in terms of quantity and quality produced. There were no productivity or quality differences between the regimes.

A focus on cereals in conference on organic breeding and propagation material with Belgian stakeholders Organic Eprints
Dewaele, Karel; Delanote, Lieven.
Belgian organic farmers are dependent on mostly foreign seed companies or their local distributors. This is the case as well for vegetables as for arable crops. The Belgian COBRA farmers conference in March 2015 aimed to bring organic farmers back to the real origin of organic seed.

A review of knowledge: inter-row hoeing & its associated agronomy in organic cereal & pulse crops Organic Eprints
J. P., Welsh; N. D., Tillett; M., Home; J. A., King.
The aim of this project was to establish the “state of the art” for inter-row hoeing and its associated agronomic practices in organic cereal and pulse crops. To achieve this a detailed review of literature was undertaken. • To facilitate inter-row cultivation in cereal and pulse crops, some adjustment of row spacing may be required. For cereals, drilling crops in 25 cm rows can reduce yield compared with normal drilling practice, primarily due to greater intra-specific competition amongst the crop (i.e. competition between crop plants). • The yield penalty resulting from widely spaced crop rows can be minimised using a number of approaches, depending on the drill: 1. Reducing the seed rate in widely spaced crop rows can help to minimise excessive...

A sequential approach for improving AZODYN crop model under conventional and low-input conditions Organic Eprints
David, Christophe; Jeuffroy, Marie-Hélène.
Advances in scientific understanding of the plant and soil behaviour in a cultivated field led to the design of numerous soil-crop models simulating crop growth. The frequent low predictive quality of these models is linked to uncertainties in inputs, parameters and equations. The AZODYN crop model predicting wheat grain yield and grain protein content was previously developed to support decision for N management of conventional and organic wheat crops. This paper outlines a sequential approach to improve the predictions of the AZODYN model by testing various formalisms. This study is based on the comparison of 38 versions of the model assessed in multi-environment trials carried out under conventional or low-input conditions. This paper describes and...

ABILITY OF COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE SOYBEAN BRADYRHIZOBIA INOCULANTS FOR COOL GROWING CONDITIONS IN CENTRAL EUROPE Organic Eprints
Zimmer, Stephanie; Messmer, Monika; Haase, Thorsten; Mindermann, Anke; Schulz, Hannes; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter; Hess, Jürgen.
In Central Europe the inoculation of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) with different Bradyrhizobia inoculants has led to unsatisfying nodulation results under low temperature conditions. The aim of this study was to test the capacity of commercially available inoculants under cool growing conditions in Central Europe. In 2011 and 2012 four Bradyrhizobia inoculants were tested on three early soybean varieties in a field trial in Germany. The number of nodules, yield and protein content were assessed. Two years data showed a successful nodulation of Product 4, Product 3 and Product 2 while Product 1 cannot be recommended. Independently of soybean variety, all of the three successful inoculants can be advised regarding grain yield. Protein content and protein...

Ackerbauliche Auswertung von Praxiserhebungen in Beständen verschiedener Körnerleguminosen: Erste Ergebnisse zu Unkraut und Bestandesdichte Organic Eprints
Schmidt, H.; Langanky, L..
Data of approx. 325 organic and conventional grain legume fields between 2015 and 2018 will be analysed regarding agronomic issues. On this selection of farms that are involved in the exemplary demonstration networks of the German governments protein crop strategy additionally to the data collected in the network, management information will be evaluated and various soil and plant parameters will be measured. The main goal is the identification of agronomic factors influencing the success of the grain legume cultivation. First results show the higher weed pressure and the closer connection of weed cover ratio and legume plant density in organic compared to conventional systems.

Acting against common bunt: exploration of various control methods Organic Eprints
Fontaine, Laurence; Robin, N.; Bruyère, J.; du CHEYRON, P..
Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida) is a fungal disease with a large ability to spread. Consequences may be rejection of grains for sale or even a large decrease of yield. Different trials were carried out in organic farming in a research project (funded by the French Ministry of Agriculture between 2008 and 2011) to achieve a better control of common bunt. Results confirm that the resistance of wheat cultivars is a factor to consider. Despite most varieties currently cultivated in organic farming are sensitive to common bunt, some cultivars appeared to be resistant to the races tested. Concerning seed treatment, no product is available for organic farming and 100% efficient; but several solutions have been identified. Only one product is...

Advances in weed management for organic cereal production in southeast Australia Organic Eprints
Burnett, Viv; Enshaw, Tim; Sutherland, Steve.
Organic cereal production in southeast Australia is challenging for producers due to a range of e of influences such as weeds and low soil available phosphorus. Two experiments were conducted on a certified organic property at Berrigan NSW during 2001-2003 to investigate ‘within crop’ weed management and forage crop management for weed control. Sowing later using a short season wheat cultivar did not affect yield and reduced (P<0.05) levels of annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaud.). Incorporating a forage crop into the rotation prior to sowing a cereal resulted in improved (P<0.05) weed management for the cereal crop, in comparison to retaining annual pasture. There were no differences between forage treatments in weed management in the following...

Agronomic and environmental factors explaining Grain Protein Content variability in organic winter wheat Organic Eprints
Casagrande, Marion; David, Christophe; Etienne, Catherine; Makowski, David; Valantin-Morison, Muriel; Jeuffroy, Marie-Hélène.
A regional agronomic diagnosis was implemented to identify factors responsible for low values of Grain Protein Content (GPC) in a network of 35 organic winter wheat fields in South-Eastern France. The influence of water nutrition, radiation and temperature, weed density at flowering, nitrogen (N) status of crop at flowering and variety type were studied. Two statistical methods were used successively: classical linear regression and a mixing model approach based on a weighted sum of all possible linear combinations of explanatory variables. GPC was significantly related to variety type, crop N status and weed density. An analysis of variance showed that weed density was related to soil type and nitrogen supply.

Agronomic characteristics of the spring forms of the wheat landraces (einkorn, emmer, spelt, intermediate bread wheat) grown in organic farming Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek; Moudry, Jan.
Organic farmers look to the possibilities of growing neglected crops, such as the spring forms of hulled wheat – einkorn, emmer and spelt – for support in developing the organic farming system. In 2008, 169 landraces from the gene bank at the Crop Research Institute in Prague were tested on certifi ed organic plots. The experiment was aimed at fi nding suitable varieties for the organic farming system. In summary, our fi ndings show that einkorn (Triticum monococcum L.) and emmer wheat [Triticum dicoccum Schrank (Schuebl)] are resistant to powdery mildew and brown rust, spelt wheat (Triticum spelta L.) is less resistant to these two diseases, and the intermediate forms of bread wheat are very sensitive to such infestation. The varieties evaluated incline...

As environmental and agronomic conditions are heterogeneous between and within locations, diversity within varieties or crop populations should increase adaptability to the changing and variable range of growing environments. The additional pressure of plant genetic diversity loss, has driven novel breeding approaches such as Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) and other genotype mixtures, thereby increasing both intra- and inter-varietal diversity and ensuring a “wider adaptation” capacity for crop varieties (Döring et al., 2011). A winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) CCP was created by intercrossing 20 varieties in 2001, through collaboration with the Elm Farm Research Centre and the John Innes Institute. In 2005, a seed batch of the F4 was equally...
